Maddie Willis is a painter based in Suffolk. Her practice transforms familiar natural forms, portraits and everyday moments into dreamlike images shaped by memory. Using dramatic contrasts of light and colour, she combines photographic-like areas of sharp focus with hazy, blurred passages, reflecting the way our minds vividly preserve certain details while allowing others to soften, fade and become romanticised over time.

Flowers recur throughout her paintings reflecting both her lifelong connection to nature - shaped by generations of florists in her family - and our tendency to idealise people, places and moments from the past. Blurring the line between realism and fantasy, her work also draws subtle parallels with todays growing culture of filtered images and curated memories via social media.

Alongside her painting practice, Willis has spent the past four years working as a ceramic painter at a gallery in Southwold while building her career as an independent artist.

She recently completed a major commission of nine large-scale landscape paintings and bespoke artwork for a housing development in Hackney Wick, London.
